Riots began on Christmas Island early Monday morning after prisoners learned of the death of an Iranian Kurdish refugee who escaped the centre two days ago.

How many Kiwis are at the Christmas Island detention centre?
It's understood there's 40, but the government has not released a break down on what they are there for. There are 285 detainees at the Indian Ocean facility in total.
Is it true Kiwis started this week's riots?
Reports suggest New Zealanders were involved in the rebellion, that began when a detainee was allegedly assaulted when inquiring about the death of Iranian Kurdish refugee Fazal Chegeni.
How many New Zealanders are facing deportation from Australia?
Across Australia there are 585 Kiwis waiting to leave.
What are they being deported for?
Thirty-four committed child sex offences, 22 murder or manslaughter, and 16 rape. The most common offences were assault and theft.
How many New Zealanders are in immigration detention centres?
The latest official statistics show 195 Kiwis were in detention centres, as at September 30. Of these, 174 were men and 21 women.
Only Iran had more, with 400. There were 2044 detainees in total.
Do the New Zealand detainees have to stay?
The Australian Government says no, they are free to leave any time and return to New Zealand. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said they could still appeal the decision from this side of the ditch.
So their chances in an appeal wouldn't be negatively effected?
Not according to Mr Turnbull.
How can an Australian visa be cancelled?
Under tough laws introduced late last year, anyone who has been sentenced to 12 months or more in jail or has been found guilty of a child sex crime will have their visa cancelled. Those people then have 28 days to request a reversal of the decision.
Is that it?
No, there's also the "character test", which anyone with a "substantial" criminal record will not pass. Any wrongdoing in immigration detention centres also contravenes the test.
There's also a long list of criminal activity that would cause people to fail this test.
