LONDON (AP) British prosecutors have dropped their case against two British brothers charged over the kidnapping of journalists in Syria.
Shajul Islam, a trainee doctor, had pleaded not guilty to working with others to "unlawfully and injuriously imprison" two photographers, Briton John Cantlie and his Dutch colleague Jeroen Oerlemans, in July 2012 in Syria.
His brother, Najul Islam, had pleaded not guilty to a charge of engaging in conduct in preparation of a terrorist act.
The two walked free on Monday after the prosecution said "a problem arose" which made it impossible to present evidence.
Oerlemans was shot twice during a failed attempt to escape from his captors. Cantlie has said that none of his captors were Syrians and that several spoke with British accents.
