Resilient Tropical Storm Earl raked over eastern Canada, leaving nearly one million people without power, the last gasp of what was once a monster storm that menaced the US east coast but left it largely undamaged.
The centre of the storm made landfall at around hurricane-strength in southern Nova Scotia, but the Canadian Hurricane Centre later downgraded its seriousness as Earl buffeted the craggy coastline with winds weakening to 83km/h.
