Campion misses out at Cannes

New Zealand director Jane Campion has missed out on the top award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Austrian director Michael Haneke's sombre drama The White Ribbon claimed the Palme d'Or.

Many critics had predicted Campion would win something for Bright Star, about the love affair between poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne.

It was a big night for Austria, whose triumphs included Christoph Waltz as best actor for Quentin Tarantino's World War II epic Inglourious Basterds.

Charlotte Gainsbourg won the best-actress honour for Lars von Trier's Antichrist.

The second-place grand prize went to Jacques Audiard's drama A Prophet.
