KEY POINTS:
BRISBANE - The Queensland opposition has renewed calls for police to be armed with tasers, after a man was shot when knives were thrown at officers.
Responding to a disturbance last night police initially used capsicum spray to try to subdue a 27-year-old man at Gratton in Brisbane, but he then allegedly started throwing knives at them.
A firearm was then fired to stop him, causing non-life threatening injuries, police said.
He remains in Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition.
Opposition police spokesman Rob Messenger said the incident supported the case for police to have more non-lethal weapons.
He said a trial of tasers was delaying action, and called on Police Minister Judy Spence to roll out the devices statewide.
"The trial has proven to be a success with police successfully using a taser to subdue a violent man on the Gold Coast just this week," Mr Messenger said.
"The minister and the Bligh Labour government should stop mucking about with limited trials and roll tasers out statewide immediately."
The incident at 9.55pm (AEST) yesterday was the third police shooting this month.
On October 1, a man allegedly fleeing a break-in at Oxley golf course, in Brisbane's south, drove a car at two police officers and a security guard.
One of the officers fired a single round, but it is believed the offender escaped uninjured.
The following night, police shot dead a convicted armed robber who tried to run down an officer in Brisbane's south.
Brett Thomas Johnstone, 45, died after being shot twice as he drove a stolen van at two officers who approached him because of the unusual way the van was parked.
The police ethical standards command is investigating last night's incident.
The investigation will be overseen by the Crime and Misconduct Commission.
