CAIRNS - An armed man has surrended to police after firing a shot and taking a woman hostage in the Cairns electorate office of a Queensland state Labor MP.
The man, who is known to police, gave himself up at about 3pm (5pm NZT), police said.
He allegedly entered the office of Cook MP Jason O'Brien about noon today.
Cairns city centre was shut down as SWAT officers, police negotiators and ambulances attended the scene.
Police said the man surrendered without incident and the woman employee released uninjured.
