Optus and Telstra are expected to run a national bushfire emergency warning system that will be in place by October.
Under the system, phone messages will be sent to Australians warning them of bushfires and other emergencies such as floods.
Victorian Premier John Brumby announced yesterday that the two telcos had been targeted to deliver a national telephony-based warning system.
