Bushfire threatens 100 homes in WA

Firefighters are continuing to battle a bushfire in southwest WA that is threatening up to 100 properties.

More than 70 people voluntarily left their homes on Molloy Island and East Augusta on the southwest coast on Thursday and Friday, as firefighters battled the blaze on two fronts.

An emergency warning remains in place, with the fire currently contained, Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) said in an update issued at 9.30pm (WST) on Friday.

If conditions worsen, homes in Molloy Island and East Augusta may be impacted overnight, FESA said.

FESA chief executive Wayne Gregson earlier said strong winds and high temperatures in the area meant the blaze could flare up at any time.

An evacuation and relocation point has been set up at Centennial Hall on Allnutt Terrace in Augusta.

Six fixed-wing water bombers, a fire-fighting helicopter and two aerial intelligence helicopters have been sent to assist ground crews.

The bushfire, which started near Nannup and has been raging for more than a week, began after a prescribed burn flared out of control.

There are currently five bushfires burning in WA, with the August-Nannup blaze currently the most serious.
