SYDNEY - US President George W Bush has used his opening remarks to the Apec business summit in Sydney to again praise his close friend, Prime Minister John Howard.
Mr Bush today addressed a session of the Apec Business Advisory Council, urging Asia Pacific nations to lead the way towards a worldwide trade agreement and a plan to combat global warming.
Before reading from his prepared speech, Mr Bush again paid tribute to Mr Howard, saying he appreciated his leadership and his friendship.
"They refer to the prime minister around here as a battler," Mr Bush said.
"I know why, he's courageous, he's wise, he's determined.
"America could ask for no better friend and more steadfast ally than John Howard."
Mr Bush also praised Sydney and its residents for the hospitality they have shown since his arrival on Tuesday.
"The prime minister kept bragging about beautiful Sydney is, and he's right," Mr Bush said.
"You've got a beautiful city Mr Prime Minister."
