SYDNEY - Too many victims of brown snake bites die because those who help them do not apply bandages correctly or seek medical help fast enough, a review found.
Researchers from the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Australian Venom Research Unit found that there were many reasons for the 24 deaths in 24 years, including failure to apply pressure immobilisation bandages, delayed or ineffective application of the bandages and delay in seeking medical help.
"A pressure-immobilisation bandage was applied in 13 cases," Dr Jonathan Knott said.
"However, 10 had delayed applications and eight delayed further medical attention."
