New Zealand-born broadcaster Derryn Hinch has undergone surgery for a liver transplant.
The broadcaster's station, Australia's Radio Network, confirmed Hinch was admitted to Melbourne's Austin Hospital about 7pm (AEST) on Tuesday after a donor organ became available.
The surgery started after midnight and was expected to be completed just after 7.30am, the network reported.
Hinch, who is battling liver cancer, said if he did not receive a liver transplant he had only months to live.
The broadcaster is also facing home detention for breaching suppression orders by naming two sex offenders in 2008.
Hinch is likely to learn his fate when the matter returns to court on July 21.
