The leader of Britain's Opposition Conservative Party, William Hague, has indicated he will fight the next general election by pledging to keep Britain out of Europe's single currency and limit European power over British policy decisions.
Speaking at the party's conference, Hague warned that a re-election of the Labour Government could result in Britain losing control of its currency and taxes, defence and criminal justice to the European Union.
"This is your last chance to keep the pound," Hague said. "It's your last chance to vote for a Britain that still controls its own destiny."
A general election is widely expected for May 3, although Prime Minister Tony Blair may have to delay it because of restrictions on movement in rural areas as a result of the foot-and-mouth crisis.
