KEY POINTS:
SYDNEY - A Sydney coroner has completed the inquest into the cruise ship death of Brisbane mother Dianne Brimble.
Brimble died aboard the P&O cruise liner Pacific Sky after ingesting a toxic cocktail of alcohol and the illicit drug fantasy. During almost 70 days of evidence to the inquest, eight men of interest were identified - four of whom shared the cabin where Brimble died on September 24, 2002.
New South Wales Deputy State Coroner Jacqueline Milledge said last night that there was evidence capable of satisfying a jury that "known persons" had committed indictable offences. "And there is a reasonable prospect a jury would convict the known persons in relation to the cause of death of Mrs Brimble," Milledge said.
She then indicated she would refer the matter to the Director of Public Prosecution.
Milledge sympathised with Brimble's family, saying it had been an agonising event for them. "It was something that should not be visited on any family," Milledge said.
Before the inquest was terminated, counsel assisting the inquest, Ron Hoenig, told the coroner there was enough evidence for possible criminal charges against two unnamed people.
