The charismatic leader of a bloody secessionist movement in the resource-rich Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville has died.
Francis Ona, whose opposition to rule from the Papua New Guinea capital, Port Moresby, sparked a conflict that left thousands dead in 1988-1998, died possibly of malaria. He was believed to be in his 50s.
