KEY POINTS:
KARACHI - At least 20 people were wounded in a roadside bomb attack in Pakistan's southern city of Karachi on Monday, police said.
Edhi, a private ambulance network, said they had received reports that six people were killed. Police said they were still checking the reports.
The blast occurred in the eastern district of the city.
"So far, we have reports that 20 people have been wounded," Azhar Ali Farooqi, a senior police official, told Reuters.
Pakistan has been struck by a wave of violence that has killed hundreds of people in recent months, including opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, assassinated in a gun-and-bomb attack on December 27.
Last week, 16 policemen and three civilians were killed in a suicide attack in the eastern city of Lahore.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks but the government has blamed al Qaeda-linked militants based in the lawless tribal region on the Afghan border for them.
Pakistan is braced for more violence because minority Shi'ite Muslims are celebrating an annual mourning period that has been marred by sectarian attacks in recent years. Pakistan is due to hold a general election on Feb. 18.
