GAUHATI, India (AP) Police say a homemade bomb exploded at a market in India's violence-wracked northeast, killing at least eight people and injuring seven others.
A police officer said the fatalities included two policemen. He said the explosion occurred Friday in Imphal, the capital of Manipur state. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.
Details were not available immediately. The region is about 470 kilometers (260 miles) southeast of Gauhati, the capital of Assam state.
No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion. At least 17 separatist groups are active in Manipur state.
The rebels say the region is ignored by the central government. Most residents are ethnically closer to groups in Myanmar and China than to the rest of India.
