KEY POINTS:
Researchers have finally identified a mummified hand and arm found in an Alaskan glacier following a mysterious plane crash in 1948.
The severed limb was discovered in 1999 by two amateur investigators curious about the fate of Northwest Airlines Flight 4422, a chartered four-engine DC-4 airliner rumoured to have been loaded with gold when it crashed into the side of a volcano 60 years ago.
Forensic and genetic scientists identified the remains as belonging to Francis Joseph Van Zandt, a 36-year-old merchant marine from Roanoke, Virginia, who was one of 30 people who died.
