SYDNEY - Human remains found strewn across a motorway north of Sydney had been run over several times by passing motorists, police say.
The discovery was reported to police by one of those motorists, who accidentally ran over a piece of the remains, early yesterday near the Gosford exit at Somersby, on the Central Coast.
"It appears, at this stage of the investigation, the body has been run over numerous times," said Detective Sergeant Darren Deamer from Gosford police.
Northbound F3 lanes between Mooney Mooney bridge and the Kariong exit were closed while police combed the area for clues to how the body parts came to be on the highway. They were scattered over 400m.
It is not yet known if the remains are those of a male or a female.
Deamer could not say how many body parts had been found or if they were clothed. He was also unable to say if they were decomposed in any way.
"The search is still continuing," he said.
Police are uncertain whether the incident was suicide or a hit and run and are not ruling out the possibility that the victim died somewhere else.
Police will look at missing person reports in their efforts to identify the victim.
The closed F3 lanes reopened yesterday afternoon.
