KEY POINTS:
MELBOURNE - About 1000 Victorian firefighters continued yesterday to battle more than 50 blazes in the state's high country.
A spokesman for the Department of Sustainability and Environment said the largest fires were at Mt Cynthia, north-west of Dargo, and Mt Terrible, near Kevington.
The Mt Cynthia fire has burned about 600ha. About 300ha have burned at Mt Terrible.
He said the large number of fires had forced authorities to prioritise which areas they should focus on.
"We've got a lot of fires, including about 50 in the high country in rugged and remote terrain," he said.
"Some of them we haven't even visited yet."
The spokesman said more than 1000 Country Fire Authority and DSE firefighters were battling the fires, which began on Friday after lightning strikes in the area.
