Controversy over British MPs' perks has erupted again after authorities published a new batch of expense receipts, including one filed by a defence minister for repairing a bell tower at his £5 million (NZ$11.17 million) country pile, known locally as "the Castle".
Government Defence Minister, Quentin Davies, included on his claim form a receipt for £20,000 (NZ$44,677) for repairs to the roof and bell tower of his 18th century mansion, reports Times Online.
Over three months after the expenses claim became public, Davies wrote to Commons officials claiming that he had never intended to use public money to maintain the bell tower at Frampton Hall.
Mr Davis told The Times today it was "unfortunate" that a single invoice was issued for repairs to both his roof - which he regarded as a legitimate claim - and the bell tower - which he now says is not.
He admitted, however, that at no point did he ask the fees office not to pay for the bell tower.
