BRISBANE - An Indonesian sailing ship which had been stranded on a south-east Queensland beach for a week is this morning under tow to Brisbane for repairs.
The Indonesian Navy's 35-metre New Zealand-built Arung Samudera was Sydney bound for the Apec leaders' forum when it ran into a storm last Thursday, grounding at Inskip Point.
Australian Navy Commander Forbes Peters (Forbes Peters), who has been overseeing its salvage, said the schooner would berth near the naval barracks at suburban Bulimba at 11am (AEST).
He said the sail training ship appeared to be seaworthy when refloated last night, but its damaged keel and rudder needed repairs.
"There's still some significant defects which need to be repaired, so I don't really have any idea of how long that will take," Cmdr Peters said.
"The negotiations are proceeding between the Indonesian government and various repair agencies in Brisbane."
Cmdr Peters said the ship's 18 crew were "very happy" the operation went so well.
After repairs, the three-master will continue to Sydney, but will not arrive in time for the Apec tall ships' festival.
