Bali 'godfather' smiles at verdict

DENPASAR - Indonesian prosecutors yesterday demanded that Bali Nine defendant Andrew Chan be executed by firing squad for heroin smuggling.

Chan, 22, of Sydney, smiled as a translator explained what the prosecutors had said.

The announcement means that two of the Bali Nine now face death, six life in prison and one a 20-year term.

Chan is accused of being the group's "godfather", who organised an operation to take 8kg of heroin, worth an estimated A$4 million ($4.45 million), from Bali to Australia. Chan's alleged partner Myuran Sukumaran, 24, of Sydney, may also be executed. Judges are expected to hand down their verdicts next month.

Drug mules have accused Chan of threatening to kill them and their families when they tried to back out of the trafficking operation.
