MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) Bahrain's main opposition party says one of its senior figures has been detained over accusations he incited violence in a speech in the restive Gulf nation.
Officials did not immediately comment on the case of Khalil al-Marzooq, a prominent member of the Al Wefaq politicial bloc. The group said he is accused of encouraging violence and trying to overthrow Bahrain's Sunni monarchy.
The case could further enflame tensions in Bahrain. The strategic island kingdom has faced more than 30 months of unrest between security forces and majority Shiites seeking a greater political voice.
Al-Marzooq is a former deputy speaker of parliament who resigned along with other Wefaq lawmakers amid escalating clashes in early 2011.
Bahrain is the base for the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.
