Bad weather gives baby seals reprieve

Thousands of baby harp seals were spared a grisly death in Canada's annual cull when bad weather trapped scores of small hunting boats in thick ice.

Some crews abandoned ship. About two-thirds of this year's quota of 270,000 seals have already been filled.

The hunt is described by opponents as cruel and unnecessary, but officials say it's needed to keep numbers down.
