Argentina won the unanimous backing of Latin America and the Caribbean as it prepared to press its claim to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands in a meeting with the United Nations.
Jorge Taiana, Argentina's Foreign Minister, will travel to New York today to demand the intervention of Ban Ki Moon, the United Nations Secretary-General, to kick-start negotiations with Britain over the ownership of the South Atlantic islands.
