A newborn baby girl abandoned on the steps of a church in Sydney's inner west has been placed in the care of the authorities. Police said the baby was just hours old, with its umbilical cord still attached, when found in a cardboard box at the door of the Haberfield Baptist Church.
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital staff say the baby they are calling Joan is in a stable condition.
If Joan isn't claimed by her mother her future will be determined by the NSW Children's Court.
