Australian troops ended their peacekeeping mission to East Timor yesterday after more than five years in the former Indonesian province when General Ken Gillespie handed over control of the military base at Moleana to East Timor's Prime Minister, Mari Alkatiri.
Australia sent 5000 troops to East Timor in 1999. About 100 were left by this year.
