CANBERRA - Security surrounding Australian peacekeepers in the Solomon Islands will be reviewed following the murder of Australian Protective Services officer Adam Dunning.
Justice Minister Chris Ellison said the Australian Federal Police (AFP) was reviewing security measures, although the deployment of 100 additional troops would be a major boost.
It follows the sniper attack death of Officer Dunning who died after being hit twice in the back by a high calibre weapon.
Officer Dunning's body was returned to his home town of Canberra late yesterday, his coffin draped in an Australian flag as family members watched on.
The troops also arrived in the Solomons' capital of Honiara yesterday.
Senator Ellison said the troops, plus the review, would ensure the continued protection of the police who are trying to restore law and order to the Solomons.
"We certainly are having a review as to the security measures for our personnel, and I think the deployment of the troops will help," he said.
"A review is being conducted by the AFP, they're best placed to conduct that and we'll be guided by their advice."
Apart from reviewing security, a team of senior Australian investigators is also on the ground in the Solomons and believe they have concrete leads on the identity of the sniper.
