An Australian man survived a shark attack yesterday and limped ashore with the aid of a surfing buddy who tied an improvised tourniquet around his badly injured leg.
The injured man told ambulance officials the shark grabbed him on the lower right leg while he sat on his surfboard at the mouth of the Nambucca River, 248km north of Sydney.
The attack left the man's calf muscle attached by a flap of skin.
His friend used his surfboard leg rope as a tourniquet and helped him to shore and up the beach to a road. He later had surgery in hospital.
Two surfers, one from New Zealand and the other an Australian, died in separate shark attacks off South Australia last September.
