Australia's top soldier, East Timor veteran Lieutenant-General Peter Cosgrove, was yesterday named Australian of the Year for 2001.
General Cosgrove, aged 53, was the commander of the multinational Interfet force sent into East Timor to restore peace and order in the bloody aftermath of the former Indonesian province's 1999, independence ballot.
His performance last year won him promotion to chief of the Australian Army.
