A statewide fire ban is in place today as NSW firefighters brace for a New Year's weekend of extreme conditions.
About 500 firefighters are currently containing 20 fires across NSW, and battling to contain a further five blazes ahead of forecast temperatures in the 40s, low humidity and gusting dry winds.
A total statewide fire ban is in force until midnight on January 1.
NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) spokeswoman Rebel Talbert today said the focus is now on containing all current fires ahead of tomorrow's forecast extreme conditions.
Firefighters are trying to bring a new blaze in the state forest near Armidale under control and are also keeping a close watch on the NSW north coast and Hunter area.
"We're going to be focusing our resources today on making sure those fires are completely contained or out today in preparation for the bad weather that's coming tomorrow," Ms Talbert said.
She said 1000 firefighters were on standby in case of new fire outbreaks, but those numbers could be boosted ahead of tomorrow's severe conditions.
RFS Commissioner Phil Koperberg today said the total fire ban would not stop most planned New Year's Eve fireworks displays.
"Despite the fact there's a total fire ban on, the vast majority of fireworks celebrations will not be affected," Mr Koperberg told ABC radio.
