A man has been shot dead by police and an officer is injured after a domestic dispute spiralled out of control in Tasmania's north.
The man was shot by police at the address in Westbury, near Launceston, shortly after 11am (NZT) on Sunday, police said.
A domestic fight occurred at the address on Saturday and the woman involved in the dispute requested police attend on Sunday morning to escort the man while he removed his property.
"The female contacted us yesterday about wanting him out, the relationship had some sort of incident occur and as a result she wanted him to remove his property and leave," Sergeant Adrian Leary told AAP.
"Police attended with him this morning.
"They were there to keep the peace."
It is unclear at this stage how the incident descended into a gun being fired, Sergeant Leary said.
The man involved in the domestic dispute was shot by police and died.
"The incident has resulted in a police officer discharging their firearm," police said in a statement.
"A male person is deceased as the result of an incident."
The officer was injured in the incident and he is being treated at the Launceston General Hospital for a soft tissue head injury and shock.
Sergeant Leary said local police are shocked and their thoughts are with the injured officer.
"He was a absolutely a well-respected officer," he said.
Police are at the scene and the commander of Tasmania Police Professional Standards is also due to visit to conduct an investigation.
The coroner also had been notified.
