Shark barriers Electronic barriers to keep killer sharks away from bays and beaches are set to be tested in Australia, South Africa and the United States. Australian company Seachange Technology has advanced development work on the barriers and will help identify potential test sites.
The company has entered into a partnership with a South African Government agency, the Natal Sharks Board, to develop prototype barriers that will deter sharks without posing a major risk to other species like dolphins and whales.
The barriers will be based on the technology used to protect triathletes in Sydney Harbour during the 2000 Olympics. The same technology is also incorporated in a range of electronic shark repellent products already used by divers and surfers.
