Australia issues bushfire warning

Australia banned the lighting of open fires in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria yesterday as tens of thousands of firefighters prepared for scorching temperatures and high winds on Christmas Eve, which they feared could whip up bushfires.

Firefighters have tamed 25 bushfires in the state in recent days but are still water-bombing fires from the air in South Australia and Victoria.
