New Australian of the Year Mick Dodson said the Government should consider changing the date of Australia's national holiday because many indigenous people view it as celebrating the invasion of their homeland. The former land rights activist said Australia should open a debate about moving the holiday from January 26, which marks the arrival of the first colonists in Sydney in 1788 saying: "Many Indigenous Australians regard it as invasion day". Prime Minister Kevin Rudd ruled out any change.
