Police in Sydney say they were forced to use a Taser on an 18-year-old man after they were called to help a teenage girl at a Carols by Candlelight concert in Sydney's inner-west last night.
A police officer was punched in the face and a teenager zapped with a stun gun when a carols by candlelight event turned violent in Sydney's inner-west last night reports Sydney Morning Herald.
As many as 4000 people were at Halliday Park were the event took place.
Police say two officers patrolling the crowd were forced to defuse a number of arguments and scuffles before one of the officers, a supervising sergeant, was allegedly punched in the face.
The sergeant was trying to calm down two men who were allegedly being abusive to others in the crowd when one of the men allegedly turned on the officer and hit him, leaving a gash above his eye.
The sergeant then found himself surrounded by what police described as a "volatile crowd" but managed to fire his Taser at his 18-year-old attacker and subdue him.
The teenager was taken to Campsie police station and charged with assaulting police, resisting arrest and affray.
He was granted bail and will appear in Burwood Local Court on 14 January 14.
