The Queensland government will fund permanent memorials to those who perished in the recent devastating floods.
Premier Anna Bligh said families were still mired in grief after the loss of 35 lives since November. Another seven people are still missing.
"We've come through one of the most devastating natural disasters in our history and it's come with a terrible death toll," Ms Bligh said.
"There is still an enormous amount of grief being worked through in communities which have lost loved ones.
"It's understandable that people want some kind of permanent memorial as a sign that the victims of this tragedy will never be forgotten."
She said the government would work with communities who wanted to establish memorials, and fund those projects.
"We will work with the families of victims, local government, local MPs and community members to determine the design and location of memorials," she said.
The communities of Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley, which were hit by deadly flash flooding, would be consulted about separate memorials for flood victims in their areas.
"This was an event that will be etched in our history and dignified and fitting memorials would permanently honour those who died," Ms Bligh said.
"Such memorials would provide a focal point for communities in the years ahead as they remember friends tragically killed."
