Aussies warned after bushfire jumps containment lines

An emergency warning has been issued for around 100 people near Cooma after a bushfire jumped containment lines and is threatening homes.

The RFS issued the warning just before 4.30pm (local time) on Saturday for the Kybeyan Valley blaze, which is burning approximately 20km east of Cooma.

About 15 properties are under threat in the areas of Countegany and Kybeyan, the RFS said.

"People in these areas may experience fire, smoke and embers," an RFS spokesman said.

"People should shelter in place as the fire impacts property," he said, adding that it was too late for people to leave.

Around 100 people have been phoned by RFS in the area and issued with a warning, he said.

Nearly 100 firefighters, supported by aircraft, are on site to try to combat the blaze, which has burnt through more than 9800 hectares of bush and grass land.

The RFS said the fire was moving away from Cooma in an easterly direction, with a southerly change expected around 6pm.

This may send smoke billowing over Cooma.

A community meeting will be held at Numeralla Hall at 2pm on Sunday to update residents and provide further information.
