MELBOURNE - Victoria's police taskforce investigating organised crime says it has stopped two murders as part of an operation targeting an underworld network.
The Purana taskforce, which investigates organised crime including Melbourne's gangland killings, on Wednesday arrested two men as part of a 10-month operation codenamed Kennels.
The men, one 42, the other 48, were being interviewed by police on Wednesday afternoon.
Operation Kennels centred on a criminal network involved in drugs and violence, a statement from police said.
"Months of investigation and intelligence gathering is believed to have prevented two separate murders from taking place in mid 2008," police said.
Investigators said they hoped to charge a number of other people in relation to the criminal syndicate.
Purana chief Detective Inspector Bernie Edwards said he was happy with the assistance from federal police and the Australian Crime Commission.
"This is a clear demonstration of law enforcement agencies working together in the fight against organised crime," Det Insp Edwards said.
