HONIARA - An Australian Vietnam War veteran accused of conspiring to assassinate Solomon Islands Prime Minister Mannaseh Sogavare has had all charges against him dropped.
Bill Johnson, 61, appeared in the Honiara Magistrates Court yesterday where the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ronald Bei Talasasa, applied to have the charges withdrawn on the basis that police witness statements had been changed and the accusations could not be substantiated.
Johnson had been free on bail since February 7 after spending a week in jail, charged with conspiring with four others to kill Sogavare. People who know Johnson scoffed at claims of an assassination plot, saying he was just a drunk.AAP
