Following a funeral for Atakan on Tuesday afternoon, a group of protesters launched a firecracker at security forces, which prompted retaliation with tear gas and water cannons.
Atakan's girlfriend, Gokce Dayanir, said she tried to warn him to be careful at the protests. "He said he couldn't sit at home while his friends were out there," she said.
In Ankara, protesters who convened at a square in the capital city were dispersed with water cannons and tear gas.
