A man has died on the front lawn of his home in Sydney's southwest after a hail of gunshots was fired.
The 38-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds, police said, but they were unable to confirm reports he died from a shot to the back of his head.
"The deceased person will be taken for a post-mortem today and we can then confirm what the cause of death was," Superintendent Greg Rolph told ABC radio.
Police were called to the scene of the shooting around 9.40pm yesterday at the house on Nepean Towers Avenue at Glen Alpine.
It was too early to say how many gunmen were involved in the fatal shooting or how they got away, police said.
"There were some people present in the house at the time, they are currently assisting police," Supt Rolph from Campbelltown Police told reporters this morning.
Supt Rolph said he could not confirm reports that the man's teenage son could be heard screaming on the front lawn after his father was shot.
A neighbour said when they first heard the shots they thought they were fireworks.
"I thought it was firecrackers until I heard a man and woman screaming afterwards," the resident, who did not wish to be named, told the Daily Telegraph.
Investigations are continuing and police are appealing for anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers.
