The New Zealand man attacked by a shark in the Galapagos Islands has discharged himself from hospital, angry at the care he received.
Wellington man Sam Judd was surfing on outlying San Cristobal Island on Friday when a shark bit his thigh. He managed to punch the shark away but was left bleeding and in shock.
"I knew I was bleeding and I thought, 'If that has another go, it's not going to be good, so I just want to get out'," he told 3News.
He clambered 400m along the rocks. His two mates got him to hospital, where a further surprise awaited: one had to run 2km to get money for medical supplies before clinical staff would start treating Mr Judd.
"I said, 'I've got travel insurance, this is all going to be paid off, just pull the stuff out and stitch me up'.
"I was a little bit angry with that whole situation."
Mr Judd is recovering at his rented cottage - and plans to stay on in the area.
