ANC Youth League president Julius Malema's political life has reached a threshold with the Johannesburg High Court expected to rule today on his public singing of the controversial song Dubul' ibhunu (Shoot the Boer).
While awaiting Judge Colin Lamont's judgment, Malema is also fighting to stop the ANC from terminating his membership and presidency of the youth league. The ANC has charged him with three counts of misconduct. He is likely to plead not guilty to all counts on Thursday after several failed attempts to stop the ANC prosecuting him.
Lamont was expected to either ban Malema from ever singing the controversial song, or agree with him that the song symbolised the hardships of apartheid.
Civil rights union AfriForum laid the hate speech charges against Malema. Yesterday, AfriForum threatened to appeal to a higher court if Lamont's ruling went against it.
Earlier, acting High Court judge Leon Halgryn had ruled that singing the song was incitement to murder.
