United States troops fired into a crowd of stone-throwing rioters, killing at least three Afghans. Kabul's chief of highway police, General Amanullah Gozar, said a US military truck ran out of control down a hill, crashing into vehicles and killing at least five people.
Anti-American riots followed and then US troops opened fire.
"Our soldiers thought they were being fired on from the crowd and they fired ... in self defence," said a US military spokeswoman.
