Tropical Storm Alex was gaining strength as it swirled across the Gulf of Mexico yesterday on a path toward Mexico's northeastern coast - well clear of a massive oil spill.
The storm could become a hurricane by today, about the time its heavy rains are expected to begin lashing the Mexican states of Tamaulipas or Veracruz, according to the United States National Hurricane Centre in Miami.
