A 6.1 magnitude aftershock has struck off the coast of northern Japan this morning, the United States Geological Survey reports.
The quake was centred 190km east of Morioka, in the north of Honshu island, and 537km north-east of Tokyo, at a depth of 11.2km and struck at 4.57am Japan Time (7.57am NZT).
Neither the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre or the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory following the quake.
