Actor Geoffrey Rush, the first Australian-born actor to win an Academy Award, has been named Australian of the Year.
Rush, who accepted the award in Canberra last night, said he was lucky his career coincided with an expansion in the Australian arts scene. "Hopefully there are footsteps for young Australians to follow proudly," he said.
Rush, who was born in Toowoomba in Queensland, now lives in Melbourne.
