KEY POINTS:
HOBART - More than 100 members of Tasmania's Aboriginal stolen generations will receive compensation, Premier Paul Lennon announced yesterday.
A total of 106 claimants - 84 people removed from their families as children, and 22 children of stolen generations victims, will share in up to A$5 million ($5.8 million) set aside by the Tasmanian government.
Announcing the payments, Lennon said it was an "important step forward for reconciliation" and a sincere effort to address a shameful wrong in the state's history.
"No amount of money can make up for Aboriginal children being removed from their families simply on the basis of race," Mr Lennon said.
An independent assessor reviewed more than 150 applications for compensation and successful claimants will receive individual ex-gratia payments to A$5000, up to a maximum of A$20,000 for families. Forty-five other claimants lost their bid for a share in the compensation fund.
