SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Authorities say 56 Haitian migrants were found stranded on a tiny island off Puerto Rico's west coast.
A spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the group, along with one Cuban migrant, was found by Puerto Rico police officers patrolling the waters near Desecheo island.
Jeffrey Quinones told The Associated Press Tuesday that officials are interviewing the migrants to obtain more details about how they ended up on the island. He said authorities have found no evidence of a boat capsizing.
Coast Guard officials expect to transfer the migrants to Puerto Rico later Tuesday.
The number of Haitian migrants heading to Puerto Rico has increased significantly in the past year.
